House Brackmann Scale - For Facial Paralysis II

I think HB II describes me. A perfect score is noted first:

I Normal symmetrical function in all areas

II Slight weakness noticeable only on close inspection. Complete eye closure with minimal effort. Slight asymmetry of smile with maximal effort. Synkinesis barely noticeable, contracture, or spasm absent.

Hi John,

You look great. Yes, I remember the abdominal drainage tube. I had the bloody thing pulled twice. Once after the first surgery and then again after they repaired my CSF leak. Yes, a leak. You're lucky buddy!!!

Don't worry too much about the facial paralysis. Your face will come back. Mine has. Any residual paralysis is barely noticeable. Try acupuncture if you're into that sort of stuff. A visit to a good ND (Naturopathic Doctor) may help. Again, if you're into that stuff. Never discount alternative medicine.

Keep up the good sense of humour. I looked like a pirate for the first 3 months. Couldn't blink. I had my Halloween costume all set.

The steriods made me feel like I was walking on the moon when I went to the park with my kids. I was also eating everything in site.

The headaches will start to subside. Keep taking your meds and DON'T say no to drugs. I ended up back at the local hospital for pain management. They made me sit in chairs for 5 hours 7 days after surgery. I wasn't as tough as I thought.

Best advice...be good to yourself. Rest, relax, sleep and give yourself lots of time to heal.

Take care.
